How We Stay Healthy Vegans On The Road

LIVING HEALTHY AND SUSTAINABLE LIVES EVERYWHERE WE ARE

We have been vegan for two years and living on the road traveling for 16 months. Although we now live in our self converted camper-van, making it easier to cook and enjoy healthy food on the road, we have done it all from AirBnb to hostel, and have picked up a tip or two to share about staying healthy vegans while traveling.

So wether you are out exploring ancient temples, hiking in abandoned hills or snorkeling deep into the sea, you want to stay healthy and strong to be able to enjoy what's around you.

Our preferred diet is plant-based but you do not need to be vegan to take some of those tips in.

Keeping your diet balanced and full of nutrients and life while having a great time and trying new food is always worth it !

SO HERE ARE SOME OF OUR FAVORITE WAYS TO STAY HEALTHY VEGANS ON THE ROAD

#1 Bring your own snacks !

NOURISH

Sharing delicious and nutritious recipes and solutions toward better living.

If you are like us and can go from totally fine to '"if you don't feed me now, I'll eat you", then you know that buying time can be a great savor, and it goes for all diets and sustainable lifestyles. Better be prepared..

There is nothing like a big day of adventuring to open up an appetite and there may not be healthy or affordable meals everywhere you go.

We usually travel on a budget, and more often than not, the available options are in between expensive-touristy-places because we didn't research but are about to pass out from hunger or unhealthy and overly packaged items from supermarkets.

We love food and sometimes eating just because we're hungry feels like losing an opportunity to discover something amazing. So packing a few snacks with us helps to keep us alive until we can find that incredible little cafe, this fantastic street food vendor or whatever it might be.

EASY IDEAS :

  • Nuts and dried fruits - for the energy and extra protein, because it's easy to pack in a      little bag and you can buy it in bulk to save the plastic wrapper !

  • Fruits - easy to pack, gives you a little extra sugar boost and you can eat them on the  go.

  • Roasted chickpeas or salted edamame beans - these are delicious on top of    being super-foods, full of protein and energy and will fit perfectly in a little tupperware in you bag.

  • Rice or corn cakes - crunchy and filling, they are our end of the week, empty fridge go to snack. Easy to pop in your pocket and deliciously salted.

#2 Don't be afraid to ask !

IMG_0952.jpg

When traveling, we love to try local food. It's actually one of the reasons we travel !

Discovering new tastes is what makes us understand a culture and we wouldn't want to give it up for the world. And although it can be tricky to stick to a plant-based diet in certain places, it is not impossible !

Most dishes can be altered, tweaked slightly so they can fit your dietary needs, and we get away with it most of the time..

  • You can ask to exchange one thing for another in your meals  (the meat inside our tacos in Mexico city for some delicious spicy rice with chickpeas)

  • You can find a place that will make the city or country's speciality differently (a coffee shop that did vegan Pastel de Nata in Lisbon)

  • You can research to find the specialities that actually are vegan (tajins in Morocco are vegan, for exemple).

So traveling as a vegan does not mean that we don't get to try the local food - it means that we don't always try all of the specialities, or not exactly as they are traditionally made but instead, in a way that fits with our beliefs. And they are usually much tastier because of it !

#3 Eat the right kind of food !

IMG_3312.jpg

Make sure you get enough of the right food. It's happened to all of us. You get caught up in your day and find that everything is closed and you didn't have any food. Or you had so much candy floss and popcorn that you didn't see a vegetable all day. Our trick ?

Hit the local farmers market. Besides being a really cool opportunity to discover fruits and veg that you've never seen or tasted before, you can get some nutritious food to leave in your hostel, hotel room, van or wherever you are staying, to make at least one healthy meal a day.

OUR MUST HAVE LIST :

  • Spinach, kale, chard - bring you iron, calcium and make a great salad base.

  • Tomatoes, carrots, berries - vitamines, fibers and delicious in a quick meal.

  • Walnuts or chia seeds - rich in omega 3, important for your brain and body and delicious as a snack or topped on salads and porridge.

  • Chickpeas in jars and peanut butter - protein-rich and easily transformed in a quick meal

  • Wholemeal bread, rice crackers, oats - loaded with fiber, these carbohydrates will keep you full and are super important for your body's good function and especially your central nervous system and brain.

Toss these in your morning bowl before hitting the road, layer it in a sandwich in your room or turn it into a salad at night, it has everything your body needs in a day. And although it does not substitute eating healthy food at every meal, it helps staying full of energy and cheer in a moment of need !

There are so many ways to stay healthy while discovering the world, and the bottom line is that we love food. We love to discover new places and new cuisine. We love our planet and every living creature. These tips have helped us find a balance between those passions and believes, and we hope they will be useful to you too !

BECOMING VEGAN HAS BROUGHT A LOT OF LOVE AND COMPASSION INTO OUR LIFE, AND IT HAS ONLY BEEN REINFORCED WITH TRAVELING AND SEEING WHAT A WONDERFUL PLANET WE LIVE ON. WE STAY VEGAN TO TAKE CARE OF IT AND IT'S INHABITANTS !
