10 Ayurvedic Rituals For The Whole Being

“AYURVEDA TEACHES US TO CHERISH OUR INNATE-NATURE, TO LOVE AND HONOR WHO WE ARE, NOT AS WHAT PEOPLE THINK OR TELL US WE SHOULD BE".

― Prana Gogia

The ancient Ayurveda science is one of the world’s oldest holistic sciences; it was developed more than 3,000 years ago in India. It is still used today in many parts of the world and is making a strong come back in our western societies.

This science sees the body as working hand in hand with the mind and soul, and treats all three together. The holistic approach does not just heal but prevents disease from happening by keeping the body, mind and spirit strong and healthy.

In so many ways, the Ayurvedic science has wonderful rituals and principes that can be added little by little in our everyday life, making it full of color and ease, to find our path towards a healthier lifestyle.
If you are interested in learning more about Ayurveda, make sure to check out What is Ayurveda and what it can do for you - by Shubhra Krishan, a wonderful and all inclusive book, with recipes, in depth explanation of the doshas and ideas to live your life closer to the ancient principles.

SO HERE IS 10 RITUALS AND PRINCIPLES TO ADD BY THE SPOON-FULL INTO YOUR EVERY DAY LIFE.

1# RISE WITH THE SUN

Ayurveda believes that the best routine to have is to follow the sun. In the morning, when the sun rises, you can hear all the birds, insects and animals starting their day, it's the time for us to awake as well.

Getting up early helps us to find energy during the day, and allows us to carve a little personal time before the madness begins.

2# FIND YOUR MORNING ROUTINE

A routine is calming and energizing for all doshas, for both the mind and body, as it helps to balance our digestion, assimilation, sleep, builds discipline, self-esteem and peace.

Your morning routine can include drinking a warm tea, stretching, writing in a journal or meditating to calm and prepare your mind and body for the day ahead - creating a slow and mindful bubble if you will, that will energize and empower you for the day.

3# CELEBRATE YOUR MEALS

Ayurveda believes that joy and pleasure are important components of a healthy digestion. Turning your meals into a sensory event with pretty silverware and flowers or candles, soft music and well presented dishes will have an effect on your mood and your digestion. Plus, it's just one more way to show ourselves a little extra love.

4# TREAT YOUR SKIN

Your skin is the biggest organ of your body and is responsible for regulating your body temperature, protecting your organs and preventing dehydration.

Ayurveda believes that the perfect way to hydrate the skin is to apply oil on the whole body, massaging it in the tissue with your hands, before taking a warm shower. The warm water will open the pores of the skin to help the oil penetrate and hydrate the body fully, and it will wash away the excess, as to not block your pores. After the shower, simply tap your skin dry and go about your day !

I love taking these few minutes in the morning to massage the oil into my skin, I really believe that it is wonderful for the body but also the mind, creating a lovely positive form of self care, and self love.

5# GO TO BED LIGHT AS A FEATHER

Sleep is probably the most important point on our wellness list. When you sleep deeply and enough, you are more likely to go the extra mile for yourself, to exercise, to eat nourishing and delicious food, to have patience and kindness towards yourself and others, etc. There are a few things you can do to improve your sleep (check out our Life changing things to do before bed), and one of them according to the Ayurvedic science is to eat your last meal three hours before going to bed.

Going to bed right after a heavy meal will bring an agitated sleep and won't give your stomach and digestive system enough time to empty completely before your breakfast.

By eating early, you make sure that most of the heavy digestion is over with once you find your pillow, making it that much of a deeper rest.

6# PRACTICE GRATITUDE

There is no doubt that a positive mindset is more enjoyable and efficient. One thing that can promote that relationship with the positive is to practice gratitude. This technique helps us to find the light even in the darkest day, and little by little, opens our minds and heart to receiving more.
You can simply write down three positive things that happened to you, or things you enjoyed, or are thankful for on  a piece of paper each day.

7# DRINK WARM WATER

Warm water helps to cleanes the digestive tract, rehydrates the whole body and encourages bowl movement. It takes a bit of getting use to (it might feel like drinking the bath water at first), but it is so much better for assimilation of the minerals in the water, and has a very calming effect on my mind as well.

If you don't like warm water, try to stick to room temperature, and avoid cold water completely. Cold water is a bit of a shock to the system and asks our body for twice the effort needed.

8# MOVE YOUR BODY EVERYDAY

Daily exercise, even in the form of some light stretching is wonderful for your circulation, mental health, mood and you've guessed it - digestion.

Keeping your body in shape helps it age well and stay healthy and regulate itself. For me, daily exercise is also a form of self love. Feeling my body moving with my breath, feeling my muscles after I exercised and getting out of my head is a real need.

9# PRACTICE SELF AWARENESS

Self awareness can be anything from meditation and breath techniques to journaling or praying, or anything else that can bring you a sense of "self".

Building a relationship with yourself with these tools heightens the perception of being, and is a powerful tool to reach self love. It also helps you sort out through your emotions and anxiety, grounding you and establishing a strong connection with yourself.

10# WEAR YOUR MOOD

Listening to your moods and energy levels is incredibly important, and one way you can try to listen closer, is by wearing colors that match them.

  • If you need to be more grounded, feeling a little al over the place or anxious, prefer calming colors such as yellows, oranges or deep purples.

  • If you feel agitated or angry, prefer soft colors, such as whites, blues, greens and pastel colors.

  • If you feel lethargic or tired, try warm, stimulating colors, such as reds, oranges and yellows.

There are so many things that western medicine overlooks, including the link between mental, emotional and physical health. As Ayurveda takes care of the whole being for wellness, you can try to look at every last aspect of your life too. From the way you wake up, to where you choose to have your meals and what form of exercise you prefer, what you wear and how you speak, how you interact with others and with yourself.

By ironing out all of these little aspects of your day, you invite kindness and consciousness into your day.

KEEP YOUR LOVED ONES CLOSE, WITNESS THE SUN RAISING IN THE SKY, LISTEN TO THE BIRDS AND INSECTS FLY AROUND, PLANT YOUR FEET IN THE EARTH AND SEE ALL THAT YOU REALLY CAN DO.
