A Natural Deodorant Recipe That Actually Works

I started to make my own deodorant three years ago and I can't even fantom doing anything differently. The recipe that I use take minutes to make, last me months, is 100% natural and is dirt cheap. I mean what's not to love ???

A few things that I love about these recipes - the consistency is more like a cream that I apply, which I like so much better than the roll on cold gel that we are use to. I love that you can change the essential oils used to play with the different perfumes that you wear and my absolute favorite thing is that I can pour the deodorant in tiny containers to keep with me and forget about it - until I realise that I forget to put any on in the morning or took a shower at the gym. Simple things make your life so much easier..

Because this deodorant in 100% natural, it won't keep the same texture throughout the year, depending on where you store it. It can get very runny in the summer and hard in the winter, but this won't affect the properties. Now, not everyone is into baking soda used in deodorants, I personally have no problem with it, but this is why I've put two different recipes. I tend to use the one with baking throughout the year and might change to the other one during the summer when my skin gets a little more sensitive and baking soda could irritate it. It's a very personal thing to know, so I'll let you try out and see which one works best for you !

#1 MORE ON THE INGREDIENTS

Like I've said before, some people don't love to use baking soda as it can irritate sensitive skin, this is why you can replace it with sea salt and it will do the same job - i.e absorbing all types of moisture, which makes it useful for keeping your underarms dry and killing odor causing bacteria.

I like to use coconut oil for this recipe but you can easily change it for some other type of vegetal butter such as shay butter or avocado butter.

Arrow root is a wonderful absorbant and stays very gentle and smooth on the skin, you can also use cornstarch for the same result !

Lastly you can play around with essential oils, keeping in mind that some are better for the skin than others - the best ones to use in deodorants are lemongrass, lavender, grapefruit, tea tree, lemon, cedarwood and lime, as they are gentle on the skin and work well at trapping odors - so overall very fitting to add to a deodorant recipe !

TO MAKE 3 SMALL JARS OF CREAM :

2 tbsp arrow root powder (or cornstarch)

1 tbsp baking soda (or fine and natural sea salt)

2 tbsp coconut oil (or shea butter, avocado butter..)

10 drops of an easy on the skin essential oil (lemongrass, grapefruit, lemon..)

#2 STEP BY STEP

1. Melt the coconut oil slowly either directly in a pot or in a bain-marie (over a pot of boiling water).

3. Once melted, take them off the heat and add the arrow root powder and baking soda, stir well until it's all combined than add the essential oil drops.

4. Pour into containers and let cool until they solidify, and then apply as needed !

Making my own deodorant for the past three years has been such a game changer. I've gifted them to just about everyone I know and personally use it everyday of the year. I think it is a wonderful way to cut back on plastic and chemicals present in modern day deodorant, while still smelling fresh and feeling confident. And, I mean, if you need any more incentive to try this recipe, remember that Joaquin and I live in a tiny van and only take proper shower about twice a week.. This stuff better be good or we would have died a long time ago !!

I hope you can try this recipe and fall in love with natural deodorant as fast as we did -

Sending you extra love ! xx
