Simple Eating

our Technique !

HOW WE STARTED GAINING TIME, SAVING MONEY & LOVING FOOD EVEN MORE!

We’ve heard it all, minimalist dressing, frugal lifestyle, simple self care routine but simple eating is just making it's debuts.

I grew up in France, the country that sings about food, and Joaquin in Mexico, where people love food so much that they have it all day long. So, it comes to no shock that we are both big foodies at heart.

When we moved into our first self converted camper-van we lived for a year with no electricity and no fridge. And although that should have made things much more complicated for our food driven minds, it actually made things much easier.

HERE WE SHARE HOW WE KEEP OUR EATING CLEAN AND DELICIOUS, BUT ALSO OH SO SIMPLE !

1. OUR VIEWS

We discovered that by having less space in our food pantry, we were only getting items we truly loved and could cook-up four different ways, according to what we were in the mood for that day.

Suddenly, we weren’t wasting food anymore, we were not spending hours cooking and stressing about what we would have for our meal and always enjoyed what we ate.

The secret was not the van itself, but the size of our pantry, making us choose only items we absolutely loved and that were easy to mix and match. Instead of following a proper recipe that would require ingredients we had to buy specially, we created meals from ingredients we loved and felt like eating.

2. HOW WE DO IT

If we break it down, simple eating for us, is figuring out a few « food styles » you love, and stocking up on those, making sure they can all mix and match. No matter what you are in the mood for at the time, you can grab them from your fridge (or cooler box or whatever you use these days.. no judgement coming from us !) and make yourself a meal.

For example, we tend to love anything Mexican, and would always have rice and beans in our pantry, cumin, chili pepper and paprika in our spice rack and tortillas or flour if we felt like making them ourselves. Any vegetable we would be cooking up with this base of ingredients would turn into a wholesome, nutrient full and absolutely delicious meal.

We have three or four of these go-to’s food styles, and switch them up when in the mood.

Asian food is a must in our house, as we love a good stir fry so we always stock up on rice noodles, peanuts, terriaky sauce, ginger and soy sauce. We know that any veggie will go great with those ingredients, and can be turned into easy and opened for the imagination kind of meals. From cauliflower and broccoli wok, to courgette and bean sprout noodle soup or chili pad thai with peanut sauce.. Anything goes.

Of course we also love anything on pasta, and buddha bowls and salads are wonderful simple meals, that will work with anything you want to throw in there !
From these bases, our fruits and vegetable selection varies with the seasons.

3. HOW IT CHANGED OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH COOKING

Using this « food styles » technique helped us change our way of spending time in the kitchen, enjoy everything we eat and stop wasting food and money shopping for things that went un-eaten.

We have found that this works much better for us than meal planning, as we love the freedom of deciding on the spot what we are in the mood for each day. Because we mostly get very similar items, it also took away the stress at the food store, and made it an easy and enjoyable time. If you’re interested, I’ll list down bellow our typical grocery list.

You might be thinking, well I do this all the time ! Of course, we all have our favorite recipes and we are definitely not the first people to find out that simple eating is incredible. But for us, figuring out wide range recipes that could work with anything on hand has revolutionized our way of eating. To know that you can make a delicious salad, even if you don’t have the same ingredients as on the recipe, to find that pasta is incredible with house made pesto, ratatouille, mango sauce and tofu, to discover that you can throw anything you have left over on a plate and call it buddha bowl has simply changed our foodie lives.

4. WHAT IT CAN DO FOR YOU

If this is something that is appealing to you, try writing down a few ideas of types of meals you truly enjoy. From there see what you need to always have on stock in your pantry, chickpeas, soy milk, pasta, quinoa, cashews.. and see what fresh vegetables and fruits can go with your meal, making sure that they can change according to the season, what you are in the mood for and what you have on hand !

Happy easy life to you all !
